Big news! The mystery of the Sonic Statue in the mountains of Mie is finally solved!
Here is the article on J-Town Net which summarized the whole story:
三重の山奥にある「謎のソニック像」 設置主の遺族が、すべての真相を語った

I summarized the article in a few tweets as follows, but I might also do a complete translation of it later.

🔵The mystery of Sonic statue in Mie prefecture solved!https://t.co/lZF4w79jBF— ●SonicJPNews● (@SonicJPNews) April 12, 2019
It belonged to now deceased Mr. Yuji Kodera, CEO of Kodera Industry which owned SEGA World in Kadoma City, Osaka. As this shop was taken down 15 years ago, -
- Kodera-san brought the Sonic statue home and placed it at current location as a sign for road to his mountain villa.— ●SonicJPNews● (@SonicJPNews) April 12, 2019
Kodera-san's family told the interviewer that he liked gathering people, and told his guests to look for the Sonic statue when visiting his villa. They also -
- know that this Sonic is now a news topic, and told that their father must be happy to see people gathering for the statue.— ●SonicJPNews● (@SonicJPNews) April 12, 2019
They are aware that Sonic is now covered in moss due to high humidity in the area, and they were just talking about repainting him nicely once again.
What a nice backstory he has!— ●SonicJPNews● (@SonicJPNews) April 12, 2019
The Mysterious Sonic Statue is not a mystery anymore, but it will continue to catch people's attention and gather people, just as Kodera-san wished.
If you are planning to visit him, here is the location:https://t.co/XPXyTqb4Hh
Thank you to Badnik Mechanic who initiated the action on the Mysterious Sonic Statue, to the writers of Den-Fami Nico Gamer and J Town Net who sought and found the backstory, and the Sonic community which was united to seek the truth about this mystery.
Rest in peace, Kodera-san. I wish you were still here to see us gathering to your Sonic, but I guess we keep that for our afterlife.
For now, I hope that the statue will get restored so that it's stable and clean again, and gets some coating to fight the humidity in the area - and then placed back to current spot in honor of Kodera-san.
We Sonic fans can then visit him from time to time.
Naka-san read the news too and is happy about it.
"So the Sonic in Mie was placed as a sign for the villa of the owner of SEGA World in Kadoma, Osaka. Having Sonic as a sign for own cottage is cool and I'm jealous.三重にあるソニックって、大阪の門真にあったセガワールドのオーナーの別荘の目印に置いてあったんですね。自分の別荘の目印がソニックって粋で羨ましいですね。— Yuji Naka / 中 裕司 (@nakayuji) April 12, 2019

Thank you for the research. I feel good to have the mystery solved."

Here is the video by Badnik Mechanic which was a starting point for the investigation movement:
And here is the location of the statue in Google Map. If you are a Sonic fan visiting Mie prefecture of Japan and are eager to see a place that's not on a normal travel guide, this might be a place to go!
I'd like to see the statue with my own eyes too someday...
