Naganuma-san on Dreamcast startup sound!
Ryuichi Sakamoto is the person who made the startup sound of Dreamcast that is known to the world, but many SEGA composers back then prepared reserve options. Interesting!
đDreamcast startup sound was made by Ryuichi Sakamoto. But most of Sega composers including me had made lots of reserve sounds just in case.

Happy Birthday Sonic! / E3 / Avatar
Tomoya Ohtani â June 23rd
Hello everyone, here is Ohtani, Sound Director for âSonicâ series.
Iâm sorry for the irregular updates.
First of all, Happy Birthday Sonic!
Since we didnât have the Birthday Party this year, it was a pity that I couldnât see everyone there⌠but in that time, I could concentrate on development and do a lot of fine adjustments! (be positive)
Well, for today being Sonicâs birthday, there were so many announcements made today. A quick sum up:
The animation âSonic Toonâ with Japanese voice will be aired at Netflix from Saturday, July 1st!
To celebrate the Sonic 26th anniversary and the release of animation, official present campaign will be held on Twitter!
The CafĂŠ Selection music is now available on iTunes and Amazon MP3!
Amazonâs âSEGAmono Shopâ holds Sonic goods fare!
âANIPPON. Sonic the Heddgehog MODELâ can now be pre-ordered!
Mars16 sells new T-shirts with Sonic designs!
2nd set of Sonicâs LINE stamps is obtainable!
Sonic Lobby appears in âPhantasy Star Online 2â! Lobby is painted in Sonic color!
Full of news! I was waiting for the inland release of âSonic Toonâ. I will of course watch it!
[E3]
Now we come to the main topic. Last week, the largest game event E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) was held in Los Angeles. There, many new information of âSonic Forcesâ were revealed!
I got pictures from Producer Nakamura who was at the event. He reported that he received many interviews every day, and that the reaction to the trial play of âSonic Forcesâ and trailers released online was huge.
There are topics to talk about on the sounds side, so letâs look at them one by one.
[Avatar]
Avatarâs introduction movie was released in Japan too!
In this work, a character will appear whom the users can freely customize. One creates own hero who will fight together with Sonic and allies by using a weapon called âWisponâ which borrows the power of Wisps. A gameplay footage to âPark Avenueâ, one of the action stages, has been released too.
One can enjoy the wire action and dynamic, high-speed action using âWisponâ.
Furthermore â I guess you caught it at the end of this movie â the Avatarâs stage music will have vocals!
New: Vocal will be on every music of Avatarâs stages!
New: Also, multiple singers, male and female, are participating!
On contrary to the rocky band sound of Modern Sonicâs stage music, the Avatarâs stage music has Drumân Bass / EDM-based, dance music-like programmed sounds as its concept. With this, coolness and euphoria that are characteristic to dance music, which is different from live band sounds, can be expressed.
Since it is a customizable character, I thought a music that is structured by combining different parts would fit, and so I decided on this direction. Vocal part is not a full chorus, but adds in as fragments.
The impression you have on the music I would create for âSonic seriesâ might be a fresh and high-speed pop or rock, for example âEndless Possibilityâ or âRooftop Runâ. Since I created lots of such music in the last work âSonic Runnersâ too, so itâs no wonder.
However, I love Techno / House / Hip Hop / Drumân Bass / Dubstep / EDM and Dance music, and I had been intensively creating such sounds for a very long time. I think all of the demo tapes I submit to SEGA as an assignment for new graduates employment included such music⌠Meaning, the sound track this time includes everything in my drawer!
On June 7th, stage music of âPark Avenueâ was revealed.
For the promotion of this game, we decided to release some of the music works alone beforehand. I got many reactions on Twitter from both Japanese and overseas fans. Thank you very much.
The Avatar is a resistance member who rose up from the general citizen, so this character is scared of going to a fight. Even then, one summons up own courage and stands up against the enemy â the lyrics describes such mind, and at the same time pushes the playerâs back to cheer up.
Destiny
Lies before you
I believe
You have the power
Can you see
Your horizon?
Victoryâs
For the taking
[Stage music]
The concept of stage music is different for each game. For example in âSonic Lost Worldâ, I concentrated on expressing the motives of background (grass field, desert, ocean, snow and so on) and the playful rhythm with the music. A light and casual music, you could say.
On the other hand, for âSonic Forcesâ I am composing while having the storyâs flow and the charactersâ minds in my thought. Overall, the music is finalized in heroic and dramatic, heavy and large-scaled tone.
Which music will be reveled in which form as next? I will make you enjoy the time until game release! *grin*

Hi everyone! I finally finished the translation of the article. Thanks for the wait!
Before reading this article, I beg you to do just one thing: make sure you visit the original article by Famitsu!!!
It is to show respect to the interviewer/journalist and to the both producers Iizuka-san and Nakamura-san who are working very hard to make great Sonic games for us.
There are cool photos of E3 SEGA Booth too!

I finally finished it!!
Translation of the Famitsu.com article on Interview with producer Takashi Iizuka about Sonic Forces is here! (Original issue: 2017.04.18) https://www.famitsu.com/news/201704/18130922.html
â â â Take a look at the original article before proceeding.
This is important. Itâs to show our respect to Iizuka-san, the interviewer of Famitsu, and everyone behind it by increasing the page view of their content.
Letâs show that we want to know more about Sonic!
As new pieces of information on upcoming Sonic games were anticipated, I was very motivated and wanted to start translating stuff right away.
But before that, I had to set my own tweeting style so people can recognize my tweets easily.
Initially, I intended to mark my tweets as follows, thinking that the round blue ball next to ä¸ (kanji for the number three, which should resemble speeding lines) would look like Sonic doing spin dash. And the red ball for the finito.
đľ- will be shown with this symbol đľ- at the beginning.
The last tweet of the whole thread will be marked with a 'đ´', just like this one! đ´
One thing I forgot to mension:
If a translation doesn't fit in one tweet, I'm showing it with the ä¸đľ(or ä¸â) at the end.
It's continuationä¸đľ
As you can see in tweets from a month later following these, I noticed that many people didn't seem to read the whole thread. I realized that the symbols might not be visible from some people's phones; or I wasn't posting fast enough. IAs I had to switch my keyboard between Japanese and English, it also became more and more bothering to type these sybmols in when I was very busy or tired and still had to do translations. (Back then I was less lazy and translated tweets immediately as I found them - and that for EVERY tweet that seemed somehow relevant, even when they were more of daily comments and diaries of Sonic Team members)
All that overwork was taking too much time away from me, so I changed my tweeting style to a less frequent one. I don't translate everything if they seem very straightforward or when I don't have enough time and passion for. I hope you understand.
Also, I'm pretty sure that the blue spin-dashing Sonic at the beginning of my tweets is enough to see who is writing at one glance. Right? :)

It was that moment when saw somebody showing their disapprovement over a google-translation of a Japanese tweet fom Shun Nakamura-san, the producer of Sonic Forces, who had been giving out hints and sneak-peeks of the upcoming game.
It went like this: the person understood the tweet as the game's next trailer comes in fall, which would be almost half a year from that day.
In the original tweet, however, it was stated that the game's FINAL trailer would come somewhere in autumn. Not the next one.
Some people reacted negatively to the mistranslated information, which I did not see as a good sign. If their misunderstanding remains, it would do no good for both fans and developers.
When I was talking about this small incident on how a small translation error could lead to huge gap in information, and how I could make a Twitter account dedicated for Sonic with translations of Japanese tweets into English to avoid such trouble, a friend on Twitter, Menno, encounraged me to realize the idea - so I did!
I decided on the name for the new account rather quickly. I wanted to make it simple and easy to remember.
The name SonicJPNews is a combination of three words: Sonic (obvious, yeah), JPN (= Japan) and News.
You can call it however you want, but I personally read it as 'Sonic J-P-news'.
Actually I'm curious how you read it - Sonic Japan News? Japanews would sound funny, too.
Then I drew this little Sonic icon inspired by 'Sonic the Sketchhog' of the official Sonic website. This little smiling Sonic has been my buddy ever since.
Anyway, I hope to be a help of those who want to catch up with Japanese news which are Sonic and SEGA related.
Enjoy!
