Mazin-san's photo report on dismantlement of old SEGA HQ

News from 2019.05.07-
Archived on 2019.05.12

As the dismantlement of the old SEGA HQ is about to start, Mazin-san (Masato Nishimura-san) started taking photos of the iconic building every day.

Here is the summary.

May 7th
"Pre-Daily Ohtorii. Nothing has changed yet though, but just as a first record in Reiwa. Well, actually I passed here in a car on the very first day of Reiwa, but anyway.
'Let's burn the house every day!'
Kidding, I'm going to come here every day as often as I can."
- Masato Nishimura (Mazin)

"So I decided to do some jogging from my home in Kawasaki to Ootorii every night until the old SEGA HQ will be dismantled.
But honestly, to jog this distance every day is very challenging.
Let's say it's a recklessness of being young. I'm not young anymore though."
- Masato Nishimura (Mazin)

SEGA of Japan's working conditions

News from 2019.03.01-04.03
Archived on 2019.04.22

Want to know what kind of working conditions SEGA of Japan has?
Here are some!

  • Flex Time system
  • Side business system
  • LGBT support
  • Home office on testing
  • In-house childcare
  • In-house bar
  • Fashionable retreats in Izu, Karuizawa etc.
  • Active exchange of knowledge and technique
  • Various training courses
  • No guidlines for hairstyle and clothing for job interviews [which is still uncommon in big companies in Japan]
  • Last year's welcome party was a group quiz workshop

"SEGA Sammy's Soramori Childcare  has opened in April to support SEGA employees on both their job and childrearing.
The caretaking room with forest as its motif uses the woods from SEGA Forest (under Contract of Forest' Foster Parent for protection of environment) in Nagano prefecture."

As they built their new HQ in Sinagawa, they seem to have lots of new stuff in it.
Do you want to work in SEGA of Japan now?

Mazin-san at old SEGA HQ once again - the logo is now all gone

News from 2019.03.24
Archived on 2019.04.15

Like Naka-san did few days ago, Mazin-san also re-re-visited the old SEGA HQ for the xth times - and tweeted his sadness over the main building without the SEGA logo.
The logo he stated several times before the takedown (here, or there) that would have taken with him if possible, is now comletely gone to nowhere.

Seeing the place he worked for decades to change to something totally foreign must feel weird.

Naka-san re-visited the old building of SEGA HQ again to discover that the SEGA logos are now completely gone.

He posted following tweets with pictures:

"I visited the Haginaka Park near SEGA Enterprises for my children's bike riding practice, and I took this opportunity to see the building again. All of the signboards and logos on the ground were removed. According to a guardman, due to confidentiality he can't tell me what the next company is going to be, but the construction starts next week. I wonder if it's going to be taken down. "

Today, he discovered that the SEGA logo on the 2nd building was removed at last.

He says if the logo will be destroyed, he would have it instead...
Or will it be used somewhere else?

Mazin-san re-visits the old SEGA HQ

News from 2019.03.10
Archived on 2019.03.12

As mentioned in my post from the day before, Mazin-san visited the old SEGA HQ in Ohtorii which is in the process of takedown. It's about one month since he and all colleagues of SEGA moved into the new building in Shinagawa.

Mazin-san sings about a mysterious game company which makes dreams, which he finally finds in Ohtorii after a long journey...
And his screams.
"Looks beautiful, right? It had life a second before, and now it's all rolling down on the ground... wowowow---"

(I don't know which song he is using for the parody, but we can see his sorrow...)

"The cornerstone of the old HQ (2nd building).
SEGA Enterprises is amazing. Hooray Hayao!"

(Possibly Hayao Nakayama, former President and CEO of SEGA)

He wishes that this old building would reused as SEGA museum which is like the original stage of Bonanza (Mega Drive ver.) and the 1st floor all set with interactive games.

I also wish that would be true.

"Picking up every single trace of SEGA."

That must have been a nostalgic and heartbreaking trip for Mazin-san.

Naka-san and Mazin-san on dismantlement of old SEGA HQ

News from 2019.03.10
Archived on 2019.03.12

It's been some time since the SEGA's headquarters moved to Shinagawa, Tokyo, and the takedown of old main building of SEGA was officially announced. Now it's really happening.
Naka-san and Mazin-san reacted to a SEGA fan's tweet on initiated dismantlement of SEGA's old  building in Ohtorii, Tokyo.

He used to almost live in that building for developing games day and night, and co-created one of the most iconic characters of the world. That place must hold so many memories for him even after he left SEGA years ago.

Another Sonic developer, Mazin-san (Masato Nishimura-san), who is still a SEGA employee and had moved to the new HQ now, has commented too.

(In the last sentense in his original tweet, Mazin-san states with half-humorous/half-serious tone that he would give up his virginity in order to get them.)

Then he tweets that he will go to Ohtorii to take photos of the building tomorrow. "It's only been one month, but as I went there every day for work until then, it must look nostalgic to me."

The building is memorable for so many people, both for those who worked hard there and for fans who adore such hardworks.
The building itself is beautiful too, reflecting the blue sky of SEGA color all over. It's a shame that I didn't take my chance to visit there when I still could.
Goodbye, SEGA of Ohtorii.

A figure of the old SEGA HQ? Naka-san bursts out ideas

News from 2019.02.27
Archived on 2019.03.08

Continuing his thread on the old SEGA HQ, Yuji Naka-san commented as follows on a tweet saying that a figure for the SEGA Enterprises building might sell:

"SEGA Enterprises HQ figure, that sounds good. If it happens, I want it to have each floor with reimagination of me developing Sonic or Yu-san creating OutRun and so on. Oh, I want R360, Gallaxy Force and Power Drift in the first floor. They better recreate the Sonic in the entrance hall too. Now this sounds more like a DeAGOSTINI model."

Somebody should realize all these ideas!
